Why a Shopify cart disappears between phone and laptop, and how to keep it in sync

EmbedEasy ·

Shoppers add items on one device and expect them on another. Here is why that often fails on Shopify and how EE-Persistent Cart keeps a logged-in shopper's cart the same everywhere.

A shopper adds a product on their phone during a commute, then opens your store on a laptop that evening. If the cart is empty, they have to find the product again, and some will not bother. This is a common frustration, and it has a simple cause.

Why carts do not follow shoppers

By default, a cart belongs to the browser it was created in. A different device is a different browser, so it starts with an empty cart, even if the shopper is logged in to the same account.

What a persistent cart does

EE-Persistent Cart saves the cart of a logged-in customer and shows the same cart on phones, tablets and computers. Add an item on the phone and it is in the cart on the laptop.

Setup without code

Turn it on from the theme editor. Your theme code stays untouched. The app is installed from the Shopify App Store.

Seeing the results

The app home shows carts saved, carts restored, and orders and revenue after a restore. Revenue after a restore counts only the restored items that were bought, so the number reflects what the feature actually contributed.

One thing to know

Sync works for logged-in customers. Guest carts are not synced, but they merge into the saved cart when the shopper logs in.
